Buchla
Where Moog filters sound, Buchla folds and twists waveforms. Join tamiX, head of Beijing’s Modular Commune, for a close look at how the Buchla 200e makes sound.
Created by Don Buchla in San Francisco in the early 1960s, this synthesizer uses touch plates instead of a keyboard. A complex oscillator folds waveforms to create harmonics, while a low-pass gate gives the sound a plucked quality. Often called “West Coast” synthesis, it contrasts with Moog’s approach of shaping sound with filters.
Based in Beijing, tamiX (Tang Nan, 汤楠) is an electronic music improviser and visual artist. A Buchla-supported artist, tamiX mainly performs with the Buchla 200e. tamiX heads Modular Commune, a Beijing modular event running since 2015, and has performed at Superbooth 2024 in Berlin and FoM Tokyo 2025. tamiX has led Buchla 200e workshops at SchneidersLaden in Berlin, in Tokyo and Osaka, and at Knobcon in the US. The album X New Year was released on Detroit Underground in 2022.
Explore how the Buchla 200e generates sound through tamiX’s explanations and performance.
Saturday 14 November, 14:00–15:00, on 2F.
